Where do Babies Come From – A Little More Complicated for LGBTQ Parents

where do babies come from LGBTQ

Where do babies come from LGBTQ – From Family Equality Counsel – It’s a story every parent has to tell, but for LGBTQ parents, it’s a bit more complicated. The LGBTQ+ community faces legalized discrimination, immense bias, and disproportionate financial outlays on their journey to parenthood. Our mission to advance legal and lived equality for LGBTQ+ families has never been more important.

MHB – Gay Dads Talk About Parenthood – Pride 2021

Gay Dads Talk About Parenthood

Gay Dads Talk About Parenthood – Hear from gay fathers across the world how they celebrate Pride with their kids, and what Pride means to children born into gay-headed families. Do kids of gay dads identify as being part of the community even if they don’t self-identify as LGBTQ+? How did the perspectives of the dads and the children change as they hit different milestones? Is it mostly a cultural event, or are there conversations about civil rights, social justice, etc.?

It is so nice to be a part of this community!

Men Having Babies – The Journey Starts Here

Men Having Babies

For the last 6 years I have been the Chairman of the Board of Men Having Babies, a nonprofit organization that helps educate gay men about having their own biological children through surrogacy.

I have never been prouder of the mission of an organization I have been a part of than I am with Men Having Babies.  We also help men who cannot otherwise afford surrogacy with our Gay Parenting Assistance Program, or GPAP, which provides discounted and donated services, as well as cash grants, to eligible couples and individuals.  We advocate for ethical surrogacy and assist thousands of men around the world.  This 8 minute video shows what kind of a difference we can make.  It is my privilege to share it with you.

Gay men thinking about having families is nothing new.  While I grew up in an era that being gay and being a father were not usually understood as being possible together, thankfully this is no longer the case.  Creating and protecting a family is a realistic dream of all people, especially gay men.

Men Having Babies is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating and assisting gay men to create their own families. Each year educational conferences are held around the world in such cities as San Francisco, Brussels, New York, Tel Aviv, and Chicago. Click here to visit the Men Having Babies website.

GPAP (Gay Parenting Assistance Program) Making Gay Parenthood a Wider Reality

GPAP

For many prospective gay fathers, the path to parenthood through gestational surrogacy can often feel hopeless, financially infeasible and incredibly daunting. GPAP has changed that.

At Men Having Babies, we are committed to helping navigate this winding road, offer financial assistance, and achieve what sometimes feels impossible. Our “Gay Parenting Assistance Program” (GPAP) annually facilitates more than a million dollars worth of grants and free services. Since 2014 we helped more than 500 couples and singles who otherwise would not be fathers today!

Each year more than 1200 prospective fathers attend our educational conference, receive peer guidance, expert advice, and access to reputable providers. We are also very proud of our groundbreaking advocacy for ethical surrogacy practices and higher acceptance of our families, and multiple partnerships with research institutions.

Best Interests of the Child – Evolving Family Law

best interests of the child

Best Interests of the Child – In this next installment of the Columbia Teachers College series on professionals working within the LGBT community, I have the privilege of discussing dome of the recent case law that affects our families and we, as professionals, can better educate the circles in which we work.

Family courts focus appropriately on the best interests of the child when attempting to determine such issues as custody and visitation in disputed matters.  This essential premise should inform their decision making processes.best interests of the child

Columbia Teachers College has created a series of videos for students who want to work with the LGBT community. I am privileged to have been featured as a mentor and to be able to tell my story. This video discusses the current law in New York, recent changes that have had an immeasurable impact on LGBT families and how the best interests of the child are paramount to a court’s adjudication of an issue.

There is no written “standard” for a best interests analysis. A judge will rely on several factors including,  familial stability, mental and physical health of the parents, drug or alcohol abuse, primary caretaker role, the ability of the parents to get along with one another and, depending on the child’s age, what the child believes is in their best interest.  The health and safety of the child are always the utmost consideration.
